We were able to spend our last day in Cairns in whatever way we chose. Some people decided they wanted to explore more of Cairns on foot, while others decided to take a horseback ride or go white water rafting... and then there was the group of us who decided to face our fear together and go skydiving! We went to the middle of nowhere to get to a little house to the side of a field. As soon as you were off of the bus, you were signing in and then almost immediately gearing up to go into the plane. (I barely had time to use the bathroom for crying out loud!) It was like they were throwing you in the plane before you could change your mind and actually realize that you were about to jump 14,000 feet out of an airplane...
Now, I have always wanted to skydive and when I would tell people they would usually ask "Why would you jump out of a perfectly good plane?" Oh, this plane wasn't "perfectly good." I was ready to get out of it the second I was put in it. It was easily the scariest part with its tiny frame and lack of seats. Then there was the door I would be jumping out of; it was like a plastic garage door that didn't lock down. Of course, I was in the front and nice and close to this door. Yup, it didn't look "perfectly good" to me.
We were flying higher and higher for what seemed life forever, but finally a yellow light came on, which meant we were jumping in three minutes and to put on your goggles. Another eternity went by and the green light came on so they opened that scary door. I was the third person to go. I immediately started screaming at the top of my lungs just seeing the two people in front of me jump. As soon as the first pair jumped it just became a steady stream of people jumping out of the plane. So before I knew it, my instructor, Ray, and I scooted towards that door within seconds of the others jumping out. Arms crossed and head leaned back into Ray's neck; it was our turn to jump. (I shouldn't really say "our turn to jump," considering I was paralyzed and Ray made the move out of the plane.)
So as we detached from the plane and began the free fall, my shrieking, terrified type of scream immediately turned into more of a shouting with laughter and excitement. As awesome as it was, I blacked out for some of the jump and the free fall went by so quickly, before I knew it I was being jerked by the released parachute.
I still get butterflies just thinking of the turns we would make with the parachute out, one of the most amazing feelings after the free fall. However, it is hard to compare the feeling you get from the turns with the parachute to the free fall because you're stomach doesn't drop during the free fall; at that part you just feel more alive. (Corny, i know, but incredibly true.)
I highly recommend that you sky dive and I highly suggest that you invite me to go with you because I would love to do it again!
